Premenstrual syndrome may be associated with early menopause

Researchers from Karolinska Institutet (KI) have found that severe premenstrual syndrome is characteristic of women at high risk of early menopause and more severe menopausal symptoms.

This is reported by the Dr. Evin website.

It is also possible that these patients are more likely to have stiff blood vessels, meaning that PMS may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) includes physical and mood-related symptoms that regularly occur in women before menstruation. Their severity is known to be associated with reduced quality of life, poorer mental health and increased risk of hypertension.

The new study involved more than 1,200 women with premenstrual syndrome, with an average age of 41. The 2,400 women in the control group did not experience PMS and their average age was 42. The participants were followed for an average of 20 years. The risk of early menopause (excluding that resulting from surgery or cancer treatment) was more than 2.5 times higher in women with PMS.

In addition, these women suffered from more severe menopause symptoms: the risk of moderate to severe menopausal syndrome was 70% higher compared to women without PMS, and menopausal hot flashes were three times more common. Moreover, the more severe the PMS symptoms were, the worse the menopausal symptoms were. Scientists suggest that PMS is associated with a violation of the exchange of signals between the pituitary gland and ovaries.

This is also contributed to more inflammation due to PMS, which damages the ovaries, hastening the onset of menopause. Severe menopausal syndrome may be related to greater arterial stiffness, which prevents the body from cooling properly. This is only a hypothesis for now, but its confirmation in future studies could indicate a higher risk of cardiovascular disease in women with PMS.

It is also advisable to learn that women should not steam their feet under certain conditions.
