Insulin makes you crave junk food before your period.

Ladies may be well disciplined in all things dietary, but once a month there is a period when they are drawn to eat junk food - scientists have attributed the craving for junk before menstruation to a drop in insulin.

The main reason for the sudden craving for sweets during the critical days lies in the peculiarities of the female body. Professor Martin Henie conducted a study at the University of Tübingen in Germany. The results showed that in the premenstrual phase of a woman's cycle - after ovulation but before the onset of menses - a region of the brain called the hypothalamus reacts less to the hormone insulin.

In a normal situation, insulin reaches the brain after a meal, after which a woman feels satiated for longer and does not feel the urge to snack. Thus, scientists have come to the conclusion that before menstruation insulin does not work so well in the brain, from which its deficiency wants to fill up faster. And the easiest way - weakness and fast carbohydrates, which are in everything harmful and tasty.

What foods make it easier to get through your period?

Although food can really help during periods, it is still not worth it.Obstetrician-gynecologist, expert physician of the laboratory "Hemotest", Candidate of Medical Sciences Olga Ulankina named what products can be replaced by harmful.

It is not necessary to drastically change the diet during menstruation, said the doctor. The level of iron in the blood of women during menstruation usually decreases, especially if they are heavy. This manifests itself in the form of fatigue, apathy, dizziness. This is where food will come to the rescue. These products will replenish iron stores:

  • eggs;
  • offal;
  • fish and seafood;
  • cereal;
  • leafy green vegetables;
  • dark chocolate.

And protein during your period will give you energy and make you feel better. Good sources of protein:

  • meat;
  • cheese;
  • cottage cheese;
  • tofu;
  • lentils and beans.

What foods will help relieve pain during your period

A good way to reduce pain during menstruation is with ginger tea. You can add other useful ingredients to it:

  • honey;
  • cinnamon;
  • milk;
  • mint;
  • cranberries.

But keep in mind that menstruation should not normally be very painful. If you regularly experience intense pain during your periods, go to a gynecologist, the doctor advised.

It is also advisable to learn that premenstrual syndrome may be associated with early menopause.
